10 Ways Technology Has Changed Our Lives

Transportation, communication, entertainment, education—technology has radically altered the way we interact with the world around us and each other. Think about it—how many of your daily routines would be impossible without the technologies you use every day? Let’s take a look at how technology has changed our lives in the last 100 years and how it’s set to change even more in the next 100 years.

1) Digital Storage
Digital storage is probably one of the most obvious (and in some ways, most profound) impacts technology has had on our lives. Think about it: With physical photos, we could only keep them if we had enough space for them, and we couldn’t make back-ups—which were essentially replicas of each other. These days, a digital photo takes up almost no space at all. And if you choose to back that digital photo up to an external drive or cloud storage service like Dropbox or Google Drive, it takes up zero additional space at home! This makes it incredibly easy to make plenty of backups (great for your peace of mind) and even share them with friends and family members!

2) Home Appliances
Home appliances are a great example of how technology has made our lives easier and more convenient. One of these devices is something called an Instant Pot, which replaces seven home appliances in one: slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, sauté pan, yogurt maker, pressure cooker and a warmer. The first benefit of an Instant Pot is that it can make all those things you used to do with multiple home appliances all on its own. Another technology that makes life easier is WiFi-enabled home appliances, such as air conditioners or fans. These products allow you to control your home from anywhere with your smartphone or tablet and can even be controlled remotely when away from home. A benefit of having WiFi-enabled home appliances is being able to change settings from afar so you don’t have to come home from work and waste energy heating or cooling an empty house. This way, they only turn on when someone needs them.

3) Banking
As we’ve developed our technology, it has allowed us to spend more time on things that benefit us more. One of these advancements is banking; now, you can transfer money from your office across town to another account in a matter of seconds. While online banking is available for many people and may seem like second nature, there are still some unique benefits of old-fashioned brick-and-mortar banking services. With online banking, it is easier than ever to keep track of your spending habits, saving you time while also helping you learn how to manage your money better. Banking services have moved beyond simply having cash on hand. Banks have incorporated technological systems into their customer service platforms as well as added new features for checking accounts and debit cards.

4) Transportation
Technology is revolutionizing how we travel from place to place. When cars were first introduced, they were so expensive to own and maintain that they were accessible only to those who could afford them. Nowadays, there are transportation options at every price point—from inexpensive ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft to commuting via public transportation. For city dwellers especially, there are few greater benefits than being able to avoid driving in traffic.

5) Mobile Communications
In addition to making our communication more efficient, mobile communications have changed how we date, mate and make friends. As mobile technologies become more sophisticated, there will be additional changes that no one can yet imagine. The future is here—and it’s definitely wireless. So check out these ways technology has revolutionized our social lives. The first use of mobile phones was for mobile communications in cars. Many early car phones were installed by car dealerships as a way to encourage potential buyers to purchase new vehicles. In-car phone systems could include telephones in a variety of places within a vehicle, including inside or on top of the dashboard; under or next to the driver’s seat; or even built into rear-view mirrors or glove compartments.

6) Education
Technology in education is advancing at an accelerated rate, which may be attributed to young people becoming more familiar with technology in their everyday lives. There are several ways that technology has benefited our education system. Today’s children have access to a plethora of resources online and can research academic subjects from their homes with relative ease. Technology is also being incorporated into classrooms, as more schools are purchasing tablets for students to use during lessons. Furthermore, most universities offer access to an abundance of resources via computers on campus. Technology has helped education by making it easier for students to learn outside of school, as well as providing them with valuable tools inside of school. Technology benefits education by making learning easier and more efficient for all involved parties.

7) Entertainment
Technology has brought us closer to entertainment in many ways. We can access a huge number of films and television shows for free or through an inexpensive rental service like iTunes or Netflix. Even if you prefer listening to music, technology has made that easier too with massive libraries of free music just waiting to be downloaded. If you love gadgets, there are even more benefits from technology like an internet-connected watch, tablet computer, portable game console, and home media system. Technology makes it easy to stay entertained on your own schedule.

8) Waste Disposal
In some ways, technology has made waste disposal easier. Gone are our days of old kitchen garbage disposals and stinky trash bins in backyards. The Internet of Things (IoT) has provided us with ways to dispose of waste on a large scale that would have been considered a dream in times past. Whether it’s a massive project such as smart trash cans or efficient household collection systems, you can count on technology to improve how we deal with our daily garbage.

9) Health Care
Today, technology can benefit our health care significantly by improving diagnosis and preventing medical mistakes. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud computing, and genomics are making rapid progress. The more progress we make in these areas, more technologies will become available for personal use. Your current health status is largely determined by your lifestyle habits and environment. Therefore, you should take control of your lifestyle behaviors and environment to get better health care results in a fast way.

10) Cleaning/maintenance of our homes
Technology has made it easier than ever for our homes to remain clean and clutter-free. From appliances like robot vacuums that roam across floors, cleaning as they go, to device-controlled thermostats that ensure your home is kept at an optimal temperature, you don’t have to worry about these chores any longer. And with devices like Roombas, which vacuum without human supervision, your home can be cleaned even when you’re not there!
